The research of Seline Sonntag and her team aims to improve treatment for newborns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome by developing a tiny valve that can be integrated into existing stents to better control blood flow. This biohybrid valve is specifically designed for babies and could reduce heart strain, complications, and the need for further surgeries in the future. Their paper, “Small patients – Big needs: A material-based approach to develop miniaturised valves for congenital heart diseases,” received the “Paper of the Month” award for February 2026.
